Anti-aging wrinkle creams are
primarily hydrating moisturisers formulated with certain key
ingredients to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and
wrinkles. Some of the most common active anti-wrinkle cream
ingredients include retinol (for instance, retinyl palmitate).
In various formulations, retinol has been shown to rejuvenate
skin, by stimulating the renewal of skin cells and evening out
skin tone. Other popular wrinkle cream ingredients include alpha
hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids. These have a peeling
effect if used as part of a chemical peel regimen. They've also
been shown to be effective if used in a proper formulation with
the correct concentration. Other common wrinkle cream
ingredients include Q-10, anti-oxidants, peptides, and Boslowox.
Retinol - A vitamin A compound, Retinol is one of the first
antioxidants to be used in anti-wrinkle creams. Antioxidants
neutralize free radicals, which are essentially unstable oxygen
molecules that can damage the skin over time by breaking down
skin cells and causing wrinkles. Anti-wrinkle creams that
contain retinol and other reasonably effective antioxidants are
formulated to neutralize and prevent free radicals from causing
damage to skin. There are other more potent Vitamin A
derivatives, such as tretinoin, which is FDA approved for
treating wrinkles, but requires a prescription anti wrinkle
cream.
Hydroxy acids - Some of the more effective and popular
anti-wrinkle creams contain hydroxy acids to help repair,
restore and rejuvenate skin. Also known as exfoliants, alpha
hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids and poly hydroxy acids help
remove the top layer of dead skin and stimulate the growth of
new, smoother and more evenly toned skin. These acids are
essentially synthetic formulations of acids derived from fruits
that contain sugar. Wrinkle creams that contain sunscreen in
addition to a hydroxy acid formulation tend to be great "2-in-1"
products.
Coenzyme Q10 - This is generally the ingredient to look for in
wrinkle creams that are designed to treat fine lines and
wrinkles around the sensitive eye area. A nutrient, Coenzyme
Q10, functions to help cells regulate their energy production
when applied as part of a wrinkle cream formulation. And as
effective as it can be, it can also be used in areas like around
the eyes, where skin is generally more sensitive. Studies have
also shown that applying Coenzyme Q10 before being exposed to
the sun can protect against damage from UV rays.
Other ingredients commonly found in anti-wrinkle creams include
Kinetin, Tea extracts, and copper peptides.
Understanding how the key ingredients in wrinkle creams affect
your skin is important when trying to choose the best wrinkle
cream for your specific skin type and needs. However, simply
looking at the ingredients list of a wrinkle cream product is
often not enough. Depending on the concentration of key
ingredients used, and the overall balance of the formulation,
the effectiveness of any particular wrinkle cream can differ.
It's important to consult and purchase wrinkle cream from one of
the larger, more reliable companies.
